Our November concert celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of the American composer, Charles Ives (1874-1954), with the performance of his Symphony No. 2. This work was written at the very end of the 19th century and was premiered over 50 years later in 1951 by Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic. In the early 20th Century, Ives dreamed that music would evolve into “a language, so transcendent, that its heights and depths will be common to all mankind.” Many popular American songs are alluded to in this work, including "Columbia, Gem of the Ocean."
Completing the program are two additional works by American composers “No. 1, Jubilee” from Symphonic Sketches by George Chadwick (1854-1931) and Generations: Sinfonetta No. 1 for String Orchestra, II. Alla sarabande by Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson (1932-2004).
